The Wesleyan Pentecostal Churches believe that the Scriptures are the only infallible rule for faith and practice. The Bible speaks to every aspect of life. Accordingly, WPC seeks to follow a Biblical pattern of church government. The Scriptures clearly indicate that Jesus Christ is the one Head of the Church, universally and locally. He is Head alone and His headship is shared by no spiritual or temporal ruler. No one man is to obscure the single headship of Christ. Consequently, as established by Christ the Head, the New Testament church maintained a plurality of pastors in every church. These men were predominantly called elders or bishops as the terms were used interchangeably. Plurality of leadership existed at every level being shared severally and jointly by the elders. Although the elders fulfilled different roles on the leadership team, no “one man” was appointed to be head over the others. Peter was not appointed by Christ to be the head of the Apostles. He had a lead role and could be termed as “first among equals” but he possessed no supreme authority over his fellow apostles and elders.
Following this pattern, the church at Washington has three pastors. Pastor Woods filling the lead role does the principal preaching and teaching. Pastors Caudle and Lapp share a supporting role, serving in various areas of the pastoral ministry. These three men work together having a mutual accountability and authority while at the same time fulfilling different ministry portfolios. The Biblical pattern is effective and beneficial for the church. Strengths and weaknesses are offset, the load is shared, the body is edified and the Head of the Church, Jesus Christ, is glorified.
